Every buying guide here is desk research. I read manufacturer specifications, retailer listings, owner reviews and the better independent write-ups, then I compare products of the same type against each other and write down what the differences actually mean for a weekend. Where I have used the category myself, that goes in too, and I say so.
I do not run a test lab. I do not weigh packs on a bench, hose down jackets or time inflation with a stopwatch. I do not own most of the products on this site. If a page reads as though I did, that page is wrong — tell me and I will fix it.
You will not find star ratings here. An earlier version of this site carried thousands of them, along with prices, and they were not based on anything. They have been removed. I would rather show you nothing than a number I cannot stand behind.

This is the distinction that matters, so I would rather spell it out than let the years above do work they shouldn't. Twenty-three years of backpacking tells you a great deal about what matters in a pack — where weight sits, which features are marketing, what fails in the wet. It does not mean I have carried the six specific packs in a given guide.
So: the judgement about what to look for is experience. The comparison between named products is research. Both are on every page, and I try to make it obvious which is which.

One thing you should know about the links right now: the product links on this site currently point to an Amazon search for the product rather than straight to its listing. The direct links this site launched with turned out to be wrong — some led nowhere, one led to an unrelated product entirely — so they were replaced with searches, which cannot mislead you. They will go back to direct links as they are verified one by one.
